The Department of Health have released their proposal for a consistent front of pack labelling scheme following a 3 month consultation with interested parties. Their proposal is a hybrid system combining Guideline Daily Amounts, colour coding and high/medium/low text and including fat, saturated fat, salt,  sugar, and calories. Following this announcement DH will be working with industry and other partners to agree on the details for the presentation of this system, with a view to having the system in use by summer 2013
Front of pack labelling is widely used in the UK and, for some time, the UK has led Europe in providing nutrition information for consumers. If, as suggested the different systems used have caused confusion for consumers then providing more consistency is a step in the right direction . The Foundation welcomes clarity on the proposed system for front of pack labelling in the UK and we hope that this will help more consumers make healthy choices.
