One of the actions in the School Food Plan is to introduce a set of revised food-based standards, which will replace the food and nutrient standard that are currently in place. The revised standards will come into force in January 2015

These aim to:

  • Provide caterers with a framework on which to build interesting, creative and nutritionally-balanced menus.
  • be less burdensome and cheaper to implement than the current nutrient-based standards.

The revised standards build on the current food-based standards with some additional rules, which aim to ensure that appropriate levels of nutrients are provided as the nutrient standards will no longer apply.

The draft revised standards were out for consultation from March 6 - April 16 and the BNF response to the consultation is attached below.
