Low calorie sweeteners (LCS) are a nutrition area of interest, but we know that they can also attract strong and often conflicting views, for example their effectiveness of weight loss. Despite national and international expert authorities finding LCS to be safe and authorising their use, there continues to be consumer concerns around their safety and potential side effects, with some people avoiding food and drinks containing LCS. It is important for professionals to be aware of the scientific evidence rather so that they can help consumers make informed choices about including LCS in their diet.

This course would therefore be of particular use to health professionals and students wanting to gain a better understanding of LCS and to explore some of the more debated areas, such as their use in weight management.

It may also be of interest to those working in the food industry (e.g in manufacturing, retail or catering), whether in food product development, food technology or any other roles where knowledge on sweeteners may be useful.

The course content will cover:

  • Module 1: Low calorie sweeteners in our diet
  • Module 2: Regulations and recommendations
  • Module 3: Low calorie sweeteners in a healthy balanced diet
  • Module 4: Low calorie sweeteners, sugars and obesity
  • Module 5: Controversy: evidence vs opinion

The extensive course will also include video clips from experts, and downloadable fact sheets for additional reading.

In total this course will take approximately 3-4 hours to complete but it doesn’t have to be completed all at once. You can complete the course at your own pace – there is no time limit.
